BROADWAY SIGNS! Halloween Spirits!

54 BELOW, Broadway’s Supper Club, presented Broadway SIGNs! Halloween Spirits after last year's sold out show with repeat headliner Josh Castille, (Spring Awakening Deaf West revival) and guest artists Rosa Lee Timm and JAC Cook. Joined by two time Tony Winner Michael Cerveris (Assassins, Fun Home, Sweeney Todd) for tales from Poe with entrancing songs from Sondheim. Plus a dash of Wednesday’s grooves! The ensemble cast of rockers and actors led a night of bone chilling musical storytelling and Halloween classics in American Sign Language (ASL). From the rockin’ Netherworld of Beetlejuice to Young Frankenstein and Into the Woods’s Last Midnight! Spirits abound! The Undead come to life with songs by Josh Canfield’s Off Broadway hit ALIVE! The Zombie Musical. It was a Dead Man’s indeed rollicking fun with the wit and humor of Josh Castille.


A stellar cast of Deaf Artists and Vocalists from Broadway and beyond includes Joey Antonio (Dance Camp, Zoe’s Extraordinary Playlist, Spring Awakening Deaf West revival). Gregor Lopes (Helen Hayes Award: Olney Theater’s The Music Man), Rosa Lee Timm (Wonder: The Rosa Show”) JAC Cook (Velvet Hands Broadway, Disney+ Ant d7c ASL Feature), Jules Dameron (Deaf Broadway’s Company, Lincoln Center). Featured Vocalists Josh Canfield (Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet, Dr. Zhivago), C.K. Edwards (Frozen, Billy Elliot, Shiffle Along), Noax (Mr.Holland’s Opus,The Little Princess, Celebration), Caden Zane Marshall and Lisa Dennett raised the dead and rattled our bones! All performances were in ASL and Spoken English and subtitles with our ghoulish ghosts on stage.

In 2023, Deaf Austin Theatre partnered with Hypernovas Productions to produce the first professional ASL production of this powerful, award winning play. The project included a live stage production during the fall of 2023 in Austin

Our stage production was filmed and lived streamed through Broadway On Demand on October 12, 2023, in honor of the death of Matthew Shepard.

Matthew Shepard

Matthew was 21 years old when he was murdered in October of 1998. He was a student at the University of Wyoming in the small town of Laramie. On the night of October 6, 1998, Matthew went to the Fireside Bar in Laramie where he accepted a ride home from Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney. Instead of driving him home, they drove him to a remote area of countryside, beat and tortured Matthew. They tied him to a fence and left him there to die. He was found sometime the next day by a biker and taken to a hospital in Fort Collins, CO where he died six days later on October 12, 1998.

The Broadway SIGNs! PRIDE! Cast perform excerpts from the critically acclaimed Stonewall Honor Book October Mourning: A Song for Matthew Shepard written by Leslea Newman, in American Sign Language (ASL). Poems included "The Doe,” “The Fence (Before), “Then and Now,” and “After.” 

Cast included performers from Deaf Austin Theatre’s The Laramie Project Joey Caverly (Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building), Dickie Hearts (Public’s Dark Disabled Stories), Heba Toulan (DAT & ZACH Theatre’s Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella), Kailyn Aaron-Lozano (DAT & ZACH Theater’s Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella), Jules Dameron (Director, The Laramie Project), and Dr. Brian Cheslik (DAT Artistic Director, The Laramie Project Actor). Special Guest performances from Broadway’s Grey House Erin Rosenfeld and Andrew Morrill (The Music Man). CoHosted by Sandra Mae Frank (Deaf West’s Spring Awakening, New Amsterdam)Joey Antonio (Mr Holland’s Opus). Special Guest Barbara Pitt McAdams, Tectonic Theater Writer and an original cast member  of The Laramie Project.

Costumes encouraged! Join Broadway SIGNs! for a Halloween Spooktacular with Broadway headliners from Deaf West’s Spring Awakening, including Russell Harvard, Josh Castille, and Sandra Mae Frank, with an ensemble cast. Expect a Twilight Zone-inspired night of musical storytelling, pop hits, and Halloween classics in American Sign Language (ASL), featuring a stellar cast of Deaf artists and vocalists from Broadway and beyond!

From a rockin’ “This is Halloween” from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas to the King of Pop’s “Thriller” to “The Monster Mash,” you’ll be up dancing the whole night! Rock out to Beetlejuice’s “Say My Name” with Josh Castille and Sandra Mae Frank as they bring us into the Netherworld alongside Angel Linand Robert Ariza. It’s not Halloween without “Pirate Jenny,” led by her skeleton crew, Josh Castille and Noax. Finally, what’s a Spooktacular without Joey Antonio and Mary Hould, who are “The Life of the Party?”

Other special guests include A Strange Loop’s Antwayn Hopper, who’ll join Russell Harvard as Sondheim’s Demon Barber, Sweeney Todd, and Deaf West’s breakout star Ashlea Hayes and Aladdin‘s Jared Wayne Gladly, who will “Put a Spell On You!”

Broadway SIGNs! music director Dan Pardo (“John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch,” Amazing Grace, Russell Harvard’s From the Ground Up) returns for an encore on piano and vocals.

Russell takes you on a personal journey of his life, looking back at what ignited his passion for combining music and sign language in his performances. Expect movie classics from The Wizard of Oz, Jonathan Larson’s “One Song Glory” from Rent, Rocky Horror’s “Sweet Transvestite” and a number from Sondheim and Bernstein’s West Side Story.

Discover how a Deaf kid from Texas gets empowered by his muse Madonna and eventually ends up on Broadway. Experience Russell beautifully interweaving his story with pop songs and Broadway favorites. Russell Harvard will be joined by Tony Award® nominee Joe Iconis (Be More Chill, Love in Hate Nation, Broadway Bounty Hunter), Andy Mientus (Spring Awakening Deaf West revival, Les Misérables, Wicked, “Smash”) Alex Wyse (Spring Awakening Deaf West revival, Waitress, A Commercial Jingle for Regina Comet), and more stars to be added.

Russell’s musicality has been featured on Fox 5 News, Chris Welch’s Emmy award-winning “Breaking a Sound Barrier” segment interviews with his To Kill A Mockingbird director Bartlett Sher, and a performance from Broadway SIGNs!, in which Russell performed “Waving Though A Window” with Spring Awakening costar Alex Wyse.  Frank DiLella’s NY1 On Stage: Pick of the Week featured Russell Harvard’s off-Broadway cabaret performance at The Triad Theater as a follow up to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Unmasked. This sold-out performance was described as “not to miss, one of a kind performance with Pop, Broadway and storytelling in American Sign Language.”
